MASON MOTOR CAR COMPANY and MAYTAG AUTOMOBILE COMPANY (1905-1915) The Mason Motor Car Company and Maytag Automobile Company
The above picture shows the employees of Mason Motor Car Company, lined up in front of the factory, located at
100 - 110 - 114 Southeast 5th Street (East 5th & Vine), in Des Moines, Iowa. An authority on the car places this picture between late 1907 to 1908. Nothing of this factory remains today, disappearing as an address from the city directory in 1937. The company was founded as The Mason Motor Car Company, but in 1909, the name was changed to The Mason Automoblile Company, and a new group of leaders took control. This new leadership lasted about a year, then they wanted out. Fred Maytag, William Galloway and others took control in late 1909.
There have been quite a number of past newspaper and magazine articles that have displayed a small picture of what was supposed to be the Des Moines factory, but in all actuality, it was the Maytag-Mason Auto Company in Waterloo, Iowa that was shown. Many websites also display the Waterloo plant as the Des Moines plant as well. We have several pictures of this building at later dates, and some of the Waterloo plant at it's current metal-clad existence, so the above picture has been substantiated as the Des Moines location.
Nobody in the above picture has been positively identified yet, but  the portly gentleman in front of all the others in front of the office door on the right is most probably Ed Mason. In the 1908 city directory there are listings for several employees as apprentices, and they are probably the 3 or 4 young men standing in front of the right hand garage door opening.The following information below was culled from Des Moines city directories of the time period. Given are their names, occupation and place of residency;

The following is a list of employees that were listed in the same occupation as they were at the factory, but just not

By 1910, the company had been moved to Waterloo, Iowa, and the car was renamed as MAYTAG. The production of the Maytag continued until 1911, when the new owners divested their share of ownership of the company, and Ed Mason resumed control of the company. From 1912 to 1914, cars were called the Mason or Mason-Mohler, but by that time, creditors would wait no more, the car ceased production in 1914, and the factory was sold in 1915.
If you have an ancestor or relative listed above, that would be something we would like to hear about. A larger picture can be sent to you if you think you could identify anyone in the picture. The original photo had no writing on it at all to tell who was who, so all that can be gathered that some of the people mentioned in the above lists are probably also in the picture. Please e-mail TapleyAnthony@Yahoo.com if you think you can help. A larger photo of the above can be found inside the front cover of Bill Jepsen's book; "Iowa's Automobiles; An Entertaining And Enlightening History" (2007)

Waterloo City  Directory - 1916
LOUIS C. ERBES is now the owner, from St. Paul, Minnesota. Erbes was aquainted with Fred and August
Duesenberg, and leased buildings to them to build their cars. He seems to have taken an interest in
acquiring the company run by their old boss, as he makes an arrangement with Ira Hoover to buy the whole
concerns. Erbes had grand schemes to use the factory to continue building cars, and manufacturing race cars
for competetion, He spents a great deal of capital to bring in stock from other car makes that were defunct, like
Cutting, Clarke-Carter, and Milwaukee, and his own car make of L.C.E. . He also had planned to manufacture
the Blackhawk 48 there as well. Most of this new inventory was brought in from Jackson, Illinois by train.
The entire business is now being called "The Mason Motor Parts Company", and even though he spends a great
deal of money to get the stock to this factory, he fails to advertise much locally, and fails to win many races.
What he does do is preside over the auctioning and dismemberment of all the stock, equpment and the
building itself on January 3rd and 4th, 1917, leaving only the factory building to the next occupant, and all the
contents to be scattered across the country.

1916 Addendum
A brochure that was handed out to all owners of Mason and Maytag cars, would have one believe that the entire
company was moved from Waterloo, Iowa, to Detroit, Michigan. This is partially true - part of the stock and
manufacture of Mason Motor Company was actually purchased by Standard Motor Parts Company,  Their address
in Detroit has been listed as 584-590 Franklin, 401-415 Catherine, or on the corner of Catherine & Hastings. The
drawing of the building on the brochure is actually the Standard Motor Parts building, even though it is labeled as
Mason Motor Company. This company was in the business of buying up stock of failed auto companies where it
could and thus being the exclusive distributor nationwide. The brochure goes into detail on the manufacture of
quality parts, and vaguely talks about the resumption of manufacture of the Mason car. It also mentions that some
former employees from waterloo are now employed at their factory. This was the true end of the road for the
manufacture of Masons, Maytags and Galloways.
Officers of the Mason Motor Company of Detroit, in the brochure, were:
  R.T. Gorelick
E.J. Dayton, president (Edwin Joy Dayton)
  W.S. Grant, consulting engineer
  Edwin G. Arntz, overhauling department

When Fred and August Duesenberg were planning to make their own cars in 1905, they originally were going to call it "The Marvel". Upon receiving financial backing from Ed Mason, it was renamed "The Mason". Above is the very first Mason ever built.

This artwork was done decades after the last Masons or Maytags were produced, so it's slightly off the mark. While this car may have been produced in 1909, they still would have been Masons until the factory was moved to Waterloo in 1910. A good representation of the roof up and in position though, and most company artwork didn't show this.

Dispelling misconceptions and errors about the Mason and Maytag cars, found on the internet:
1) The Mason at the Iowa State Historical Building is actually a 1908 Runabout. It has been mis-identified as a 1906 model. Mason only made touring cars in 1906 and 1907 with detachable rear seats. Besides, the car's serial number is too high to have been manufactured in 1906 and 1907.
2) A great many sites show a picture of the Maytag plant that was in Waterloo, but call it the Des Moines factory. The correct pictures are at the top of this page and halfway down this page.
3) References are made to a "Mason - Mayton" on the internet. This error has taken on a life of it's own, and has propagated itself onto other sites. What they should have typed is "Maytag-Mason".
4) The company's name has changed several times from 1906 to 1916, in this order:
     Mason Motor Car Company (1906-1909)
     Mason Automobile Company (1909)
     Maytag-Mason Automobile Company (1909-1910)
     Maytag Automobile Company (1910-1912)
     Mason Motor Company (1912-1915)
Louis C. Erbes / Mason Motor Parts Company (1915-1916)
5) Fred Maytag bought the Mason Automobile Company on May 27, 1909, and it was renamed The Maytag-Mason Automobile Company, and it was moved up to Waterloo, Iowa at the end of 1909 and the beginning of 1910. After losing money for two years, Maytag and William Galloway got out of the business of manufacturing cars in 1912, and Edward Mason once again resumed directorship of the company, until it was put into the hands of a receiver in 1915.
6) What did the company in is the fact by adding 4-cylinder engines to the Maytag line of cars, it caused the axles to break on the rear drives. At this time in history, everybody and their brother was out to make cars, and with so much competition, one could ill-afford to have their reputation sullied by mechanical difficulties. Plus, because of lagging sales caused by this, the reorganized Mason Motor Company was saddled with debt that it could not overcome. There were 5 such instances where the company needed a cash infusion to keep going, so it was never a totally successful venture.
7) There is no longer a 1910 Maytag at the Miracle Of America Museum at Polson, Montana. The car is now in the hands of a private collector in Indiana.
8) The Maytag Museum no longer owns a Maytag Touring car, as it was donated to The Iowa State Historical Buiding, In 1972 MaytagClub.com 's site still says the car is at the Maytag Museum.
9) Fred and August Duesenberg initially made the move up to Waterloo, Iowa in 1910, to work as designers in the Maytag factory, but returned to Des Moines later that year. Eventually they moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in January, 1915, and started to manufacture Duesenberg engines there. While they no longer had any creative control in the Masons or Maytags, they did supply Duesenberg motors to some models.
10) "The Hill Climber" was not the name of any one model of Mason or Maytag, but rather a nickname applied to the whole line of cars.
11) Cars were called Mason from 1906 to 1909. It was renamed Maytag-Mason from 1909 to 1910, Maytag from 1910-1911, and again called Mason from 1912 to 1916.
12) Although the company officially stopped production and innovations in 1914, there was reference that Erbes would still build a Mason car upon request as late as 1916. These were most likely cars made with what stock was on hand, and not totally new models for 1915 and 1916.
